Thousands of images apparently captured by spying school district, more details revealed
Legal proceedings are getting underway in the case of Philadelphia's Lower Merion School District -- you know, the one accused of rem0tely turning on webcams on its student's laptops inappropriately? We knew that district IT folks enabled the webcams 42 times in total, capturing pictures every 15 seconds, but now we're learning that over 400 images were retrieved of a single sophomore and that there are thousands more of other students. There is also seeming proof of use of the webcams even when laptops were not reported stolen, like when a student failed to pay the school's hardware insurance premiums. The district is apparently not standing behind its two IT employees who had the necessary permissions to enable this remote viewing, technology coordinator Carol Cafiero and technician Michael Perbix, and from what little we can tell now it's not looking particularly good for them. In a deposition Cafiero ref! used to answer any questions, citing her Fifth Amendment rights, but an alleged e-mail exchange between the two saw Perbix calling the pictures "a little LMSD soap opera," to which Cafiero replied "I know, I love it!" That doesn't sound entirely appropriate...

iPhone 4G: is this it?
April 17, 2010 at 8:48 PM

Is this the iPhone 4G (or iPhone HD)? There's no way to tell for sure, but these photos which made their way into our hands certainly do a convincing job of making us think that's very much the case. Apparently the phone was f0und on the floor of a San Jose bar inside of an iPhone 3G case. Right now we don't have a ton of info on the device in question, but we can tell you that it apparently has a front facing camera (!), 80GB of storage (weird, right?), and isn't booting at this point (though it was previously, and running an OS that was decidedly new). It's not clear if this is definitely a production model, or just a prototype that found its way into the world, but it's certainly a compelling design, no matter how you look at it.

Face-time with the handset is being shopped around for cash, but we took a pass and wanted to get these photos to you guys ASAP. Stay tuned, we're working on more details as we type -- for now, enjoy the gallery below!

iPad taken apart then re-assembled in under four minutes, Harryhausen-style (video)

iPad taken apart then re-assembled in under four minutes, Harryhausen-style (video)
We hope you're not sick of seeing the iPad's inner bits, what with the iFixit disassembly, gratuitous Blendtec promo, and even the FCC having some fun. Now TechRestore is getting in on it -- a bit tardily -- by giving the iPad the same stop-motion tear-down treatment that it lovingly applied for a Modbook last year. Not only does the company rip this magical tablet down to its constituent parts but it puts it all back together again and, while there is neither a kraken released nor Medusa slain, the video does feature some ra! ther fanciful sound effects for you to enjoy, and it's all after the break.

PS3's summer 3D firmware is all fun and games... and no Blu-ray movie support?
April 17, 2010 at 4:33 PM

If you want you and your loved ones looking like the family pictured alongside this text, sitting in front of the TV gazing at 3D dolphins emanating from you PlayStation 3 through your television console, your best bet is to envision Ecco, not Flipper.* According to TechRadar, Sony has clarified that the summer firmware update to enable 3D applies to games only, and that 3D Blu-ray movie support will come with a second update due out later this year. We haven't been able to confirm the announcement ourselves, but suddenly, that freebie copy of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 3D! isn't looking so tantalizing.

* Hypothetically speaking, of course. We have no confirmation on a 3D version of Sega's Ecco the Dolphin or Season 3 of Flipper, featuring "The Most Expensive Sardine in the World."

Microsoft changes naughty 'sexting' Kin ad, camera to be used for clothed chests only
April 17, 2010 at 2:27 PM

As a card-carrying member of the Upload Generation, your Kin is about a lot of things: chilling with your peeps and BFFs, taking pictures and video of all of life's most awesome moments, keeping tabs on your MySpace pals, and documenting the fascinating story of your nipples without a pesky American Apparel V-neck getting in the way. Or wait... maybe not? Microsoft has just pulled a Kin ad briefly featuring a young gentleman snapping shots of his PG-rated parts underneath his t-shirt in response to Consumer Reports' concerns that the move encourages "sexting" -- a growing problem amongst the world's technologically-savvy (and hormone-riddled) youth -- saying that it "takes the issue of sexting very seriously and it was never our intent to promote it in any way." It looks like Microsoft has kept the commercial around on the Kin site and just removed the offending portion -- it was only about a second long -- so hanging o! ut in underground speakeasies with fake hipsters is still okay, apparently. Follow the break for the original, unedited video.

Holocube Touch demonstrated on video, no glasses required
April 17, 2010 at 1:15 PM

The original Holocube was already fairly impressive as it was, but it looks like the folks behind it have now managed to do one better with their new Holocube Touch. While complete details on this one are still a bit light, it apparently uses the same type of projection system as the original, with some added touch capabilities to let you interact with the holograms -- although not quite to the same degree as some other systems. As if that wasn't enough, they're also now apparently hard at work on 42-inch Holocube, but there doesn't seem to be an ETA on it just yet. Head on past the break for a glimpse of this one in action.

Report: iPad grabbed 0.03 percent of all web traffic in its first week on earth
April 17, 2010 at 11:10 AM

Yesterday, when Apple announced it was pushing back the international launch of the iPad until the end of May, high demand was cited -- over 500,000 units delivered, it said. And today, we've got a report out from NetApplications that indicates the iPad might be quickly making inroads with users. Over the first week of the device's public availability, the report says, the iPad nabbed about 0.03 percent of all web traffic. For comparison, the iPhone averages about 0.51 percent of traffic. This number nearly matches web traffic for BlackBerrys in March -- 0.04 percent (Android grabbed up 0.07 percent, as did Windows Mobile). Of course, NetApplications tracks only a sampling of website traffic to gather its data, so we'll keep our eyes peeled for longer term trends.

Canon EOS 7D firmware kills the magenta phenomenon
April 17, 2010 at 8:41 AM

We thought the vast majority of our EOS 7D's image problems were over, fixed in November's firmware, but just to nip any final nuances in the bud, Canon's released another update for the DSLR that fixes, among other things, "a phenomenon in which vertical magenta-colored banding appears in still images taken in movie-shooting mode." And here you thought your MGMT concert footage was just naturally that stylish. Download via the source link.

[Thanks, Daniel]

Palm Pixi Plus for Europe granted student visa, hangs out at FCC HQ
April 17, 2010 at 6:04 AM

Just a few days after earning its all-important GFC wings, the European flavor of Palm's Pixi Plus has caught a jet plane over to the good ol' US of A where it's picking up FCC approval -- you know, just in case an owner or two ends up deciding to spend some time in the States. Model number P121UEU (as opposed to the AT&T variant, the P121UNA) now has the full blessing of the boys and girls at the Feds -- so when you pick up a Pixi Plus from your O2 shop on the next few weeks, take comfort in the knowledge that you won't be Tased, tackled, and placed under arrest for attempting to use one on American soil. That's a good thing, we'd reckon.
